The National Throws Centre of Excellence
by Phillips Smith Conwell
A first of its kind facility in Australia
The National Throws Centre of Excellence provides a dedicated space for elite discus, shot put, javelin, and hammer throw athletes to train year-round. Designed with a glue-laminated timber structure, the centre is built to withstand Queensland’s climate while offering a high-performance environment in the lead-up to the Olympics. Its flexible design supports both technical training and strength conditioning, creating a hub for development at the highest level of competition.
Our role in the production involved working closely with multiple stakeholders, from state-level organisations and politicians to professional athletes. Through carefully scripted interviews and considered visuals, we captured not just the function of the building but its role as a home for athletes—a space that fosters focus, camaraderie, and progression. By focusing on the experience of being there, rather than just its design, the final production reflects the energy and ambition behind the project.
